ALASKAN PENINSULA BROWN BEARS
Lake Clark National Park sits out on the Alaska Peninsula. Silver Salmon Creek is in the park about 145 nautical miles southwest of Anchorage. It can only be accessed by bush plane or boat. All summer long the Alaskan Peninsula Brown bears, among the largest brown bears in the world, come down to Silver Salmon Creek to start rebuilding the fat lost during the past winter's hibernation. This location, near a couple of homestead lodges who host photography tours, is a favorite for Moms with their cubs because the larger male bears, a threat to cubs and yearlings, tend to stay away from people. Initially, the bear’s diet is rather lean, consisting of sedge grasses and clams. By August, however, they are rewarded with runs of Coho or silver salmon. This provides the bears with the fat stores they need to survive the Alaskan winters.
